The British Saloon Car Championship, now known as the British Touring Car Championship, provided a new horizon for Mini after its many successful years in rallying. In the 1979 edition of the championship, Alan Curnow entered this ex-Longman Mini 1275GT, resplendent in Datapost livery. The car proved to be a great contender in the smaller engine class that season, the forerunner to today's super popular BTCC.
Showcasing a 1275cc engine, tuned up from the original 57 horsepower to 120 horsepower, it is easy to see where this Mini's name was born – it was built for racing. This ex-Longman Mini 1275GT driven by Alan Curnow placed 7th overall in the 1979 British Saloon Car Championship.
